APPLE CINNAMON OATMEAL W/ CREAM & EARL GREY TEA

Here it is the end of March, and we woke up to a cold rainy day. We thought the oatmeal was retired for the year, so we had to spruce it up with a fresh spring apple. However, it did require a coat an umbrella to run over to the market for the apple.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Oatmeal / Madison's
Apple / Ron Roth Produce
Snow Hill Creamery Cream/ Madison's
Cinnamon / Herbs & Spice and Everything Nice
Earl Grey Tea / Dean's Mediterranean

The Quakers have a great craft from architecture to agriculture. We think they would be satisfied with our use of their oats.

POBLANOS RELLENOS W/ BASMATI RICE, GROUND TURKEY AND TOMATOES

There are very many ways to make this dish with the variety of peppers and stuffings available. We went with what we had on hand, and took this towards a south of the border flavored meal.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Poblanos / Madison's
Tomatoes / Madison's
Basmati Rice / Saigon Market
Ground Turkey / Eckerlin Meats
Green Chili Salsa / Madison's
Ancho chili spice / Herbs & Spice and Everything Nice

This did not turn out to be our favorite of all meals. We cooked it in the crock pot because we knew we would be home late after attending the streetcar fundraising event. It seems we got home too late.

WILY WONTON SOUP

Since we were out of town over the weekend and the Market is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (but soon to be open on Tuesday we are happy to report), we are a bit low on goods. Luckily we had some frozen wontons and enough other random ingredients to make a very non-traditional but delightful wonton soup.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Pork dumplings / Saigon Market
Seasame Oil / Dean's Mediterranean
Onions & Celery / Simpson Produce
Beef Broth / Madison's

Iprovisation is often in order.

With Spring upon us, our soup days are becoming less frequent. These rainy days are a perfect day to cash in.

FLAT IRON STEAK W/ WORCHESTIRE, GREEN ONION, BALSAMIC REDUCTION & GARLIC BUTTER ASPARAGUS

One of the best things about Findlay Market is that you can go there with no idea of what you are going to make for dinner, and the merchants will basically make the decision for you. We have never purchased a flat iron steak before, but Eckerlin told us it was the best for pan frying, and oh my, is it.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Flat Iron Steak / Eckerlin Meats
Asparagus / Madison's
Green Onion, Garlic / Dean's Quality Produce
Balsamic / Dean's Mediterranean
Worchestire Sauce / Heist Fish & Poultry
Butter / Gibb's Cheese & Sausage

Recipe inspired by Eckerlin Meats.

We believe in our hearts that we loved this steak because we love the flat iron buiding in New York City. We wonder if Daniel Burnham was eating this when he got his inspiration.

SAVORY VEGETABLE PANCAKES, GOETTA & MANGO-BANANA SMOOTHIE

Our kitchen travelled this weekend out to the parent's house. We were doing some serious manual labor there, so we had absolutely no guilt eating multiple pancakes and all the goetta we could getta.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Eggs / Eckerlein Meats
Carrots, Peppers, Spinach, Celery, Onion / Madison's
Bread (Crumbs) / Shadeau Bakery (on Main)
Sour Cream / Gibb's Cheese & Sausage
Tomatoes / Ron Roth Produce

Pepper Goetta / Eckerlein Meats

Mangos, Bananas / Madison's
Yogurt / Dean's Mediterranean

Recipe from "Food & Wine Magazine".

These would be good with any of your favorite vegetables, but don't skip the celery, it keeps them light. Thus, you can eat more!

CHICKEN BBQ, GRILLED PINEAPPLES & SIDES

It was the first warm Sunday afternoon and our friend rode up on his bike as we were working in our little urban garden. We chatted about getting together for dinner later in the week, and with the smell of bbq in the air from neighbors, we all knew the season had arrived.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Whole chicken / Luken's Fish & Poultry
Pineapple / Gaudio & Son Produce
Col. Cajun Mix / Herbs & Spice & Everything Nice
Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce / Heist Fish & Poultry
Old Fashioned Potato Salad, Mustard Potato Salad, Pasta Salad / Mike's Meats
Parsley / Madison's

Recipe compliments of Josh.

So we were fortunate enough this lovely evening to not have to do the cooking, just platter holding, slicing and garnishing. Josh presented us with this delightful combination and said, "Eat this".

MINI BURGERS TOPPED WITH SHALLOTS, GARLIC, ROASTED RED PEPPERS & FETA ON PITA W/ MIXED GREENS SALAD

One never knows where inspiration may come from, but when in need, ask a friend. As went the creation of this evening's meal.

"What should I make with ground sirloin?"
"Sliders," she said.

And so it was.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Ground Sirloin / Kroeger & Sons
Leeks & Garlic / Madison's
Feta / Dean's Mediterranean
Red Peppers / Dean's Mediterranean
Pita / Dean's Mediterranean

Mixed Greens / Madison's

Recipe inspired by "Looch".

The leeks make these sliders extra special. Leeks have a way of doing that. They're like your favorite cousin showing up for your birthday party.

KIFTA, PITA & CHIMAY

We watched a great video in the morning on Monocle.com about a Palestinian keffiyeh factory. We talked about it throughout the day, so thought it appropriate to make a Middle Eastern dish for dinner. Thankfully, Kroeger & Sons always has freshly ground lamb on hand.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Ground Lamb / Kroeger & Sons
Parsley / Madison's
Onion, Potato, Tomato / Madison's
Can Diced Tomatos / Madison's
Pine Nuts / Dean's Mediterranean
Pita / Dean's Mediterranean
Freshly Ground Washington Sea Salt, Allspice, Pepper / Herb's & Spice & Everything Nice
Basmati Rice / Saigon Market
Chimay / Market Wines

Recipe from "Sahtein: Middle East Cookbook".

This dish is an old favorite of ours. When our Persian-American friend lived with us, we had this as a staple "family dinner" favorite. Tonight we extended the tradition when we had a cousin drop by for dinner.

SOPPRESATTA, MOZZARELLA & BASIL OMELETTE & PEARS

Egg day again. Funny thing about eggs is that they are much like the "taco". You see a quesadilla is just an open face taco. An empanada is just a folded up taco. A frittata is just puffy scrambled eggs. An omelette is just folded scrambled eggs. All this being said, we all still like our food in different shapes and textures.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Farm Fresh Eggs / Gibbs Cheese & Sausage
Soppresatta / Silverglades
Mozzarella / Gibbs Cheese & Sausage
Basil / Madison's
Pears / Madison's

Oodles of cheese and full slices of soppresatta, the heart has some work to do today.

SEAWEED SNACK

Ok, so maybe this doesn't actually warrant a full post. But who cares, its delicious and all we had to do was walk, pay, walk, & enjoy. There is actually something missing from the picture as well. We also bought samosas, but they didn't make it back to the photo shoot.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Seaweed Salad / Dean's Mediterranean
Samosas (Not Pictured) / Dean's Mediterranean

If you haven't tried this, approach it with an open mind. It has a fun texture and salty fresh taste. This does not taste like coleslaw.

COUNTRY STYLE CHICKEN STEW PROVENCAL & MILK

The other way we can afford time to make dinner while we both work all day is the infamous, slow cooker.  We picked up the ingredients Wednesday night before the Market closed (6PM) and prepared them all to throw in the pot Thursday morning. Easy ingredients, hot delight upon arrival Thursday night. Nothing beats walking into the house smelling like dinner.

Ingredients/ Vendor:
Amish Chicken / Heist Fish & Poultry
Portobello Mushrooms / Madison's
Chicken Broth / Madison's
Northern Beans / Madison's
Carrots / Ron Roth Produce
Garlic / Ron Roth Produce
Dry White Wine / Market Wines
White Pepper / Herb's & Spice and Everything Nice
Herbs de Provence / Herbs & Spice and Everything Nice
Rye Horn / Shadeau Breads (on Main)
Snow Hill Creamery Milk /  Madison's

Recipe from "Essential Slow Cooker Recipes".  Since the tide is waning on winter, we were glad to get one last stew in while its still cold. On the other hand, the fresh rye horns were so good, that we could have just had those for dinner, along with our glass of local Ohio milk.

SPAGHETTI UNDER CHORIZO GRAVY & SANGIOVESE BLEND

Since the Market House is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (until living on Findlay is common), we stocked up (ok, two days worth) on Sunday with some fresh fruits and veggies. Knowing how beat we are after the first couple days of the work week, we used our weekend energy to stir up some sauce.  So tonight it was as easy as boiling salted water for pasta and poppin' open the wine.

Ingredients / Vendor:

Tomatoes / Madison's
Mexican Chorizo / Kroeger & Sons
Onion, Garlic, Basil / Madison's
Tomato Paste / Madison's
Shaved Parmesan / Madison's
De Cecco Spaghetti / Silverglade's
Bialy Roll / Shadeau Breads (on Main)
Monte Antico - Sangiovese Blend / Market Wines

Modified "Sunday Gravy" from the Sopranos cookbook.

There's something so simple about making a red sauce, yet when it hits the palette, it always seems more complex and, this batch, extraordinary. Fresh makes it best.

SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH SCALLION, ROASTED PEPPER AND TOMOATO & COFFEE

Our first breakfast while living on the market, we admit, we did not make. We woke up that morning and asked ourselves "what should we do for breakfast". The reply was simple. Belgium waffles and Coffee (Vendors: Taste of Belgium, Bean Haus). Today, we made our own Findlay breakfast.

Ingredients / Vendor

Farm Fresh Eggs / Gibbs Cheese and Sausage
Onion Bagel / Gibbs Cheese and Sausage
Scallion, Green Pepper, Tomato / Madison's
Shaved Parmesan / Madion's
Washington Sea Salt & Pepper / Herbs and Spice and Everything Nice
Findlay Market Blend Coffee / Lookout Joe's via Madison's

It is amazing how long it takes to make certain meals and how quickly they are eaten. This on the other hand was quick to make and quick to eat! It's a good thing too, because it's daylight savings today and we lost an hour.
